Job Purpose:

To perform daily animal care duties, including feeding, waste removal, maintaining enclosures, and observing animal behavior.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follow animal care procedures as per the animal husbandry manual.
  • Assist in loading/unloading animal feed.
  • Prepare and serve food according to diet sheets.
  • Remove leftover food after meals.
  • Ensure animals are healthy and content.
  • Assist with restraining and controlling problem animals.
  • Apply treatments to ward off pests as instructed.
  • Assist veterinarians and nurses with medications and restraint.
  • Help with hand-rearing newborn animals and animal training.
  • Monitor temperature-controlled enclosures.
  • Provide suitable browse for animals.
  • Ensure cages and animals are properly identified.
  • Clean and disinfect enclosures and equipment.
  • Monitor and maintain electric fences and report any issues.
  • Ensure enclosures are safe and clean.
  • Participate in animal censuses and daily observations.
  • Record and report any abnormal behavior or incidents.
  • Provide enrichment for animals as per international standards.
  • Participate in zoo educational programs and public engagement.
  • Assist with capturing, tagging, and transporting animals.
  • Ensure compliance with animal health and welfare laws.
  • Work within WAZA and PAAZA guidelines.
  • Participate in performance management and training.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Matric / Grade 12.
  • Course in animal care, management, or related field.
  • Experience in animal care or related zoo experience.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Record keeping and physical fitness.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry and enrichment.
  • Understanding of SHEQ standards.
  • Teamwork, resilience, flexibility, creativity, and alignment with JCPZ values.

Zoo operations run seven days a week, and weekend work is required.
