Job Description
If you want to become a police officer in South Africa, you’ll go through something called the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP). It’s like a training program for new police officers that lasts for 24 months. When you join, you sign an agreement to work as a trainee for this time.
During the program, you’ll learn important legal and policing skills to help and protect people in communities, following the laws of South Africa. The goal is to make police services better, increase community satisfaction, and create a safe environment for everyone in the country.

- provide a more effective service that will improve community satisfaction and position them to fulfill their mission of creating a safe and secure environment for all who live in South Africa.
Structure of the BPDLP
The BPDLP has two main parts: 12 months at the police academy and 12 months working in a police station.
- Phase One: Academy (10 months)
- Learn the basics and get the necessary skills.
- Apply what you learn in practical situations.
- Phase Two: Workplace experience (12 months)
- Work at a police station to gain hands-on experience.
- Phase Three: Academy (2 months)
- Integrated assessments to make sure you’ve learned everything.
Becoming a Constable After Training
Once police trainees successfully complete their training, they become permanent constables in the South African Police Service.
Payment and Benefits for the First 24 Months
During the initial 24 months, police trainees receive the following payments and benefits:
Phase 1: 10 Months at the SAPS Academy
- Monthly payment: R3,175.00
- Free meals and accommodation
- Polmed medical aid (lower plan membership), no pension fund
Phases 2 and 3: 12 Months in the Workplace (Police Station) and 2 Months Integrated Assessment at the Academy
- Monthly payment: R7,275.00
- Responsible for own meals and accommodation
- Polmed medical aid (lower or higher plan membership), pension fund, and all other benefits (Leave, allowances, etc.)
Permanent Appointment After 24 Months
- Monthly payment: R10,307.00
- All benefits applicable to SAPS Act members
